Role Summary

Grayson Thermal Systems is seeking a talented Software Development Engineer to contribute to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of software solutions that power our thermal management systems. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deploy high-quality software applications that support our industry-leading products.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Act as a key member of the systems and controls team, developing, implementing and continuously improving control strategies, algorithms, and other technical solutions to whole-vehicle HVAC, powertrain and battery thermal management systems.

  • Functional and software requirements capture.

  • Modelling and design of high-level control systems.

  • Implementation of control systems in embedded environment using C/C++ (bare-metal and RTOS).

  • Validation and documentation of outputs against requirements at unit level and whole vehicle integration level.

  • Ownership of, maintaining and documenting codebase (using GitHub) to encourage re-usability, portability and reliability.

  • Participation in design reviews and code reviews.

  • Contribution to customer technical proposal, project planning, type test/routine test, customer support, customer/regulatory body audit and other activities typical within and engineering-led business.

  • Supporting, mentoring, sharing knowledge with more junior engineers and peers.

    Health & Safety

  • Adhere to all company health and safety policies, ensuring software applications align with safety regulations.

  • Identify and mitigate software-related safety risks within system integration.

  • Support the implementation of fail-safe measures within software solutions to protect users and equipment.

  • Conduct risk assessments for software-driven processes to ensure compliance with best practices.

    Quality

  • Develop high-quality software solutions that meet performance and reliability standards.

  • Implement rigorous testing methodologies to verify software functionality.

  • Collaborate with quality assurance teams to resolve defects and improve software reliability.

  • Maintain version control and documentation best practices to track software development and updates.

    Training

  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay updated with industry trends and technologies.

  • Provide training and support to colleagues on software tools and methodologies.

  • Assist in the development of user manuals and training guides for software applications.

  • Support junior team members in refining their software development skills

    Key Skills

  • Good knowledge and experience of C/C++ in embedded, real-time environments.

  • Good understanding of electronics and electrical circuits.

  • Understanding of harmonised EU and UK directives for example, low-voltage directive.

  • Understanding of cybersecurity for example, UNECE R155 and R156.

  • Understanding of functional safety for example, ISO 26262.

  • Good understanding of networking and signalling in commercial vehicle and embedded environments such as CAN, LIN, RS232, RS485, I2C and SPI. And, where applicable, their higher layer protocols.

  • Knowledge of a high-level programming language. For example, C# or Python.

  • Understanding of the concepts of, and experience of the participation in, common formal engineering processes and tools such as Waterfall, V-model, FMEA. And a willingness to embrace and support continued implementation of those or similar processes and tools.

  • Understanding of basic electromechanical systems and components such as brushless motors, servos and actuators, relays and contactors.

    Experience/Knowledge

    Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

    Previous experience in software development for automotive or industrial thermal systems (preferred).

    Familiarity with real-time software development and control systems integration.

    Understanding of industry regulations and standards related to software development.

    Advantageous if, understanding or experience in the application of railway software and electronics standards such as BS EN 50657 and BS EN 50155.

    Competencies

    Analytical thinking and attention to detail.

    Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.

    Excellent communication and documentation skills.

    Innovative mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving
