Your role as a Network and Security Engineer

As a Network and Security Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in our customer support processes, ensuring the seamless operation of UK-based ISP and Enterprise networks. Your responsibilities will include proactive monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting to deliver optimal performance and reliability. You will be integral to providing 24/7 coverage and support to our diverse customer base, playing a critical role in maintaining service availability, resolving incidents, and driving continuous improvement in network operations.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the role include:

Network Monitoring & Incident Management:

  1. Monitor Nomios customer network infrastructures (routers, switches, firewalls, servers) using various NOC tools
  2. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve network issues affecting service availability, performance, and reliability
  3. Respond to alerts and notifications to ensure incidents are resolved promptly within defined SLAs
  4. Escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate technical teams, vendors, or third parties as needed

Ticket Management:

  1. Manage and track incidents, problems, and change requests using the ticketing system (e.g., Salesforce, ServiceNow, NetAdmin, JIRA, or Remedy)
  2. Ensure all tickets are updated in a timely manner with relevant information, actions taken, and status changes
  3. Prioritise tickets based on severity and impact, ensuring that issues are escalated and resolved within SLA
  4. Collaborate with other teams to ensure that all tickets are handled effectively from creation to resolution

Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis:

  1. Conduct initial diagnostics, network testing, and troubleshooting for any detected or reported incidents
  2. Perform root cause analysis for recurring network issues and recommend improvements or solutions

Change Management & Maintenance:

  1. Participate in scheduled maintenance windows, supporting planned network changes and upgrades
  2. Ensure all changes adhere to the change management process and do not negatively impact service continuity
  3. Document all actions taken and communicate updates during maintenance activities

Customer Support & Communication:

  1. Act as the first point of contact for customers, responding to their technical queries and requests
  2. Provide clear and professional communication with internal teams and external clients during incidents or outages
  3. Liaise with customer internal teams to gather and share relevant information for efficient incident resolution

Service Improvement & Reporting:

  1. Provide daily, weekly, and monthly reports on network performance, incidents, and operational metrics
  2. Identify areas for service improvement, including automation opportunities and tool enhancements
  3. Work proactively to suggest network optimisations and infrastructure improvements

Additional requirements include:

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to provide clear updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  2. Good understanding and hands-on experience of working on IP, OSPF, BGP, and MPLS based networks (ideally Juniper-focused)
  3. Good understanding of Carrier Ethernet MEF2.0 & MEF3.0 concepts such as Eline, ELAN, etc.
  4. Good understanding of optical CWDM and DWDM technologies
  5. Good understanding of optical splitter/combiner filters
  6. Exposure to GPON & XGSPON access networks
  7. Good experience with ticketing systems such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, NetAdmin, etc., and proven efficiency in handling ticketing queues
  8. Knowledge of network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, Zabbix, or similar
  9. Hands-on experience of working with ADVA, SmartOptics, Nokia, or Ciena kit would be advantageous
  10. Hands-on experience of building and maintaining Dell/HP servers would be advantageous
  11. Experience working with ITIL methodology and meeting SLAs
  12. Juniper or Cisco Specialist/Professional level certifications would be advantageous

Organisation Structure

The Network and Security Engineer reports to the Network Operations Manager.

Job Specifics

  1. This role is home-based with occasional visits to the office in Basingstoke
  2. Hours are based on 12-hour shifts: 2 days, 2 nights; 4 days/nights off
  3. Flexibility with hours will be required in the event of a major incident
