The UK Energy market is undergoing unprecedented change as the country strives towards a net zero carbon target. The sector must contend with high penetration of modern generation, transmission and distribution technologies, energy storage and prepare for the increased demand associated with the electrification of transport and heat as the country progresses along the decarbonisation pathway. As part of the Net Zero agenda, networks have a crucial role in delivering the renewable energy which is required to be connected. The transmission network operators have secured c.£8bn as part of the RIIO T2 package.

About the Team:

AtkinsRéalis are proud to be working at the heart of the challenges in the energy industry and within our Power team we are continually developing and growing within this area. Our team is currently delivering work across the Transmission and Distribution sectors across the UK as well as supporting other Energy and infrastructure business sectors. We are in a position where we need to grow our team to enhance our capability and strengthen our service offering. As such we are recruiting a Principal Engineer to join our Electrical Engineering team.

What you’ll be doing?

You will be working in a senior position within one of our Electrical Engineering teams based either in Epsom, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow or remotely. Building strong and trusted relationships is a key part of this role. You’ll enjoy working with others, sometimes directly at client sites, sometimes from our offices. You’ll be client focused – being able to interface with clients, understand their needs and convert opportunities into successful workstreams.

You will be accountable for the following tasks including but not limited to:

  • Provide Technical Leadership on the FEED and Detail Design workstream for National Grid, SSEN-Transmission or other Transmission & Distribution clients.
  • Ensure adequate quality assurance and delivery of FEED, Detailed Design and bids for our clients.
  • Ensure adequate resources and training of resources for the purposes of delivering FEED and detailed design work for National Grid.
  • Act as BP141 (former TP141)/equivalent assurance engineer where required (candidates working towards BP141 HV Plant / Substation qualification will also be considered).
  • Review the HV plant aspects of different projects including HV layouts, elevations, maintenance access drawings, earthing design and reports, mechanical interlocking, HV busbar calculations and technical specification for the HV plant equipment.
  • Act as Principal Designer Representative when required.
  • Coordination with back-office engineers, sub-contractors and suppliers as required.
  • Proven record of ability to manage tender packages as tender manager and doing HV plant aspects of technical offers.
  • Ability to attend and chair the Design Review and Hazard Review meetings and reviewing HV plant design packages as required.
  • Attending site visits, FAT and SAT as required.
  • Strong communication skills along with teamworking attributes.
  • Customer focused when dealing with customers, identifying their needs along with business development skills.

You’ll need to have:Qualifications -

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience, with experience in Substations Design in UK Transmission sector.
  • Chartered Engineer through the IET, or working towards.

Essential Criteria -

  • Experience in a leadership/management position in a similar environment.
  • Strong understanding and leadership of the engineering projects through asset lifecycles.
  • Track record of leading teams in the delivery of Front-End Engineering and design or Detailed Design of EHV (132kV-400kV) substation projects.
  • Experience of working for a client organisation such as transmission system owner/operator, distribution network operator or a design consultancy delivering to such organisation.
  • BP141 / TP141 HV Substation qualification or equivalent authorised or ability to do so.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain existing and develop new client relationships.
  • Experience in coaching and developing junior engineers.
  • Flexibility to travel to client sites when required.
  • Capability to work under tight deadlines while achieving objectives with the ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately.
