We’re supporting our client in building an advanced testing capability focused on the resilience and assurance of next‑generation telecommunications networks. This is a rare opportunity to work on projects that directly contribute to national cyber security and the protection of critical national infrastructure.

The Role

You’ll join a collaborative team of Penetration Testers and Security Researchers working on some of the most technically complex and high‑impact challenges in the industry.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed security testing and vulnerability assessments across telecoms and IT network components.
  • Perform positive and negative testing, fuzzing, and protocol‑level assessments on modern network functions.
  • Research and evaluate new and emerging network technologies to identify weaknesses before they reach production.
  • Develop custom tooling, scripts, and automation to enhance and scale testing capabilities.
  • Produce clear and high‑quality technical reports that communicate risk, impact, and remediation recommendations.
  • Work closely with security engineers, researchers, and developers to design and improve test methodologies.

About You

You’ll bring hands‑on penetration testing experience across complex systems, ideally within telecoms, networking, or embedded environments. We’re interested in professionals who are curious, analytical, and thrive on technical problem‑solving.

Key skills and experience

  • Strong understanding of modern IT or telecoms network architectures.
  • Practical experience in testing protocols such as Diameter, HTTP/2, SCTP, or NGAP (or the aptitude to learn).
  • Experience in developing scripts, fuzzers, or automation for testing environments.
  • Ability to deliver structured, detailed technical documentation and risk analysis.
  • A collaborative mindset with a genuine interest in advancing cyber security research.

Additional Information

  • Hybrid working is available, though the role requires regular presence at the Birmingham facility.
  • Applicants must be eligible for SC clearance (or already hold it).

Why Cyber Security Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

Cyber security used to be viewed primarily as a technical discipline: firewalls, encryption, intrusion detection, penetration testing. In the UK today, it’s far broader. Organisations now face complex legal frameworks, ethical dilemmas, human-behaviour risks, communication challenges & usability hurdles. This shift means cyber security careers are becoming more multidisciplinary. From protecting NHS patient records to defending financial services, securing supply chains & safeguarding national infrastructure, cyber security now touches every sector. Employers increasingly want professionals who understand law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design alongside traditional technical skills. In this article, we’ll explore why UK cyber security careers are expanding in this way, how these five disciplines shape the profession, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to thrive in this new landscape.
