Controls & Instrumentation Design Engineer – SCADA | Substation & BESS Projects
Location: London or Glasgow (Hybrid – 3 days in-office, 2 from home)

At Empower Talent, we partner with forward-thinking companies working on some of the most exciting projects. Right now, we’re helping one of them find a Controls and Instrumentation Design Engineer to lead the design of SCADA systems across substation and battery storage projects.

This is a key role for someone who enjoys taking the lead on technical design, collaborating with high-performing teams, and contributing to the energy transition.

What you’ll be doing:



Leading SCADA system design for substation and BESS projects – from concept through to delivery

*

Creating and reviewing design documents – points lists, drawings, configuration files, and more

*

Designing hardware, networks, HMI screens, fibre networks, and data links

*

Supporting quality checks, specification writing, factory testing, and commissioning (on-site or remote)

*

Providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers

What we’re looking for:

*

A strong background in control system design for power or energy infrastructure

*

A degree in engineering and experience delivering projects independently

*

Someone who enjoys solving technical problems and working collaboratively

Ideally, you’ll also bring:

*

5+ years of experience in substation and/or BESS control systems

*

Familiarity with protocols like IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and OPC

*

Experience with virtual environments (e.g. VMware) and network tools like Wireshark

*

Knowledge of UK NIS cybersecurity standards

*

HMI screen development and a solid understanding of automation systems

*

Chartered or working towards professional registration
