Property & Liability Underwriting Manager

Role Description

We have an exciting role to join our Head Office Property and Casualty Underwriting Team, as a Property and Liability Underwriting Manager.

This is a key role within the P&C Insights and Portfolio Management Team. It will play a leading role in delivering the planned objectives including developing our underwriting strategy across the portfolio.

The purpose of this role is being a Commercial Property and Liability technical expert, contributing towards delivery of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through the monitoring of account performance, control of underwriting standards, business development activity and ensuring that business written is done so in a technically excellent manner, adhering to underwriting authority and standards.

This role will play a pivotal part in developing the technical excellence capabilities of the Property account, supporting the transformational change and creating a proposition seen as best in the market.

This is a hybrid role based in our Guildford office.

About You

Reporting into the Head of Property and Casualty Account Manager, this role will also be responsible for the following:

  • Delivers KPI targets across complex cases/portfolios worked upon to deliver the high level line of business strategies and understands Account Management principles and the impact of portfolio changes or individual cases on the account.
  • Adheres to Underwriting Authority and understands the impact portfolio or case decisions have on Profit and Loss and the achievement of plan.
  • Makes important Commercial business decisions when they are required to support profitable development of relationships, supporting the distribution segmentation strategy and delivery of plan.
  • Undertakes and reports on Underwriting Inspections, account control and quality review programmes.
  • Produces Technical training material and is experienced in training, mentoring and coaching. Participates in assessment, design and delivering of technical training as required.
  • Be a senior technical referral point liaising and collaborating with underwriters and underwriting manager’s throughout the branch network by supporting, guiding, encouraging and coaching.
  • Monitors the performance of the portfolios, identifying under and over performance, implementing remedial and opportunity actions as appropriate.
  • Makes important Commercial business decisions when they are required to support profitable development of the portfolios, supporting the distribution segmentation strategy and delivery of plan.
  • Train, coach and develop Regional underwriters and team members

Essential Skills

To be a success in this role, you will have outstanding and proven technical underwriting skills in Commercial Underwriting and Portfolio Management experience as well as the following:

  • Able to select the appropriate product for a trade/risk and apply/recommend appropriate rates and terms having recognised any increased hazards and collected sufficient information to allow a decision to be made or referral agreed.
  • Understanding of the skills and tools required for effective Underwriting and has the ability to use these key skills to underwrite risks profitably.
  • Understands internal and external provider processes and how this may impact on product delivery and performance.
  • Aware of causes and costs of claims and risk management tools and their application.
  • Understands the make-up of policy wordings and clauses with a basic understanding of non-standard covers available.
  • Strong data analysis skills and ability to make recommendations and decisions
  • Effective account management experience and expertise in handling large cases and arrangements
  • Driven, confident negotiator, strong people skills, achievement orientated, ability to lead a team
