About the team

Information security is not an afterthought; it is core to all that we do, to protect not only our data but that of our clients, and has the unwavering support of the Board.

Led by our new CISO, the in-house Information Security team is a core part of our technology services structure with mature or evolving capability across all areas of digital security and cyber defence. We align our efforts to the NIST framework and other recognised certifications including ISO27001 and SOC2 and strive to keep pace with the continually evolving threat landscape, in support of A&O Shearman's strategy to lead where global complexity creates opportunity.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to share and gain intel from the firm's cybersecurity lawyers. The global team have experience advising clients on hundreds of incidents. Leveraging this experience, they feedback practical lessons learned into clients' cyber risk management and incident response programmes.

What you will do

Network Security Operations

  • Assist in administering and maintaining firewalls and other network appliances to ensure they are up-to-date and securely configured.
  • Support the definition and implementation of configurations, policies, and rules for firewalls and other network appliances, under the guidance of senior colleagues.
  • Monitor network security metrics to help identify potential threats, risks, and indicators of compromise.
  • Perform configuration changes and firmware upgrades on network security tools and appliances, with support from senior colleagues, to maintain optimal security standards.
  • Participate in the execution of network security improvement initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives and timely delivery.

Security & Compliance

  • Collaborate with the wider Technology, IT, and Information Security teams to ensure secure configuration of network infrastructure and prompt remediation of any security issues.
  • Support the Cyber Defence team in responding to incidents related to the firm's network infrastructure.
  • Assist the Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) team in responding to client queries and requests related to network infrastructure, escalating where necessary.

Documentation & Governance

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of documentation related to network security, including policies, procedures, standards, playbooks, and diagrams.
  • Help maintain accurate records of network configurations, incidents, and changes to support compliance and audit readiness.

Development and Advocacy

  • Seek guidance from senior colleagues to support and manage the security of the firm's network infrastructure effectively.
  • Advocate for security best practices and promote a culture of risk awareness across the firm.
  • Participate in training and knowledge-sharing sessions to continuously improve network security practices.

What you will have

  • Significant experience in a network security engineering role, or extensive experience in a relevant IT engineering or Information Security role.
  • Practical experience working with core network technologies, protocols, and standards such as TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VLAN, and VPN.
  • Proven experience as a member of a network engineering, IT infrastructure, or information security team.
  • Hands-on experience with industry-standard network monitoring and management tools.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and departments.

You will stand out if you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline.
  • Recognised industry certifications in networking, such as:
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Network Engineer Associate
  • Experience working with networking in cloud environments, including Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Familiarity with industry-standard security frameworks, such as ISO/IEC 27001.
